Bratislava, avec près de 440 000 habitants, est le passage obligé lorsqu'on vient en Slovaquie. Située à l'ouest du pays, la capitale slovaque, peut sur le plan architectural se symboliser par deux édifices : Le château, qui surplombe toute la ville, et le pont (Novy Most) qui enjambe le Danube. Le vieux quartier (Staré mesto), qui comporte essentiellement des rues piétonnes, est un régal pour celui qui aime flâner, l'atmosphère y est paisible. De nombreuses bâtisses témoignent d'un passé ou Bratislava était au coeur de l'Europe.
L'université Istropolitana fut fondée en 1465 par le roi Matthias Corvinus , et à partir de 1536, Bratislava devint la capitale du royaume de Hongrie. Il fallut attendre 1918, pour que Bratislava ne fasse plus partie de ce royaume, à cette date elle devint la seconde ville de la Tchécoslovaquie, après Prague. Depuis 1993, lors du divorce des parties tchèques et slovaques à la suite des événements du printemps de velours qui avaient commencé en 1989, elle est la capitale de la République Slovaque.

Bratislava, with around 440 000 inhabitants is a must see when you go to Slovakia. It is located on the west of the country. When you arrive, your first meeting will be two buildings which are the main and probably the most typical of this town, the Castle and the Bridge, which is called in slovak Novy Most, the new bridge. Bratislava is an old city, it means that in the past, the town was very important in Europe. On a political, commercial or cultural point of view, Bratislava was at the center of Europe. The Istropolitana university was founded in 1465, and Kings of Hungarian kingdom decided that Bratislava became his kingdom capital.
After 1918, and the end of WWI, Bratislava was not part of Hungaria but became the second important town in the new Czechoslovakia, after Prague.
Since 1993, after the events of the velvet revolution of 1989, Bratislava is the capital of the Slovak Republic.
